Über dieses Buch

Being a civil engineer is a fulfilling profession. Civil engineers design sustainable infrastructure. We build houses, roads, bridges, tunnels, cultural centres, towers and much more. We often bring all our engineering skills to bear to achieve solid solutions. And often even more, which lies beyond the technical art of engineering.
The book looks beyond the technical solutions into the wider environment of civil engineers and reflects on their profession and their own attitude from a wide variety of perspectives. "Building bridges begins in the mind" means engaging in the search for connections - to a holistic professional image and to one's position as an engineer.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
“Marriage is a bridge that must be built anew every day.” A saying on a greeting card. From the perspective of a bridge engineer, this thought is quite questionable, if not absurd.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 2. Being an Engineer with Serenity
Abstract
Precision, focus, even genius—these are often associated with engineers. Serenity is rarely mentioned, yet it is precisely this that makes a complete engineer.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 3. Engineers and their Responsibility
Abstract
The engineer and his products will never be perfect. They will, in general and in the best case, meet the demands placed on them.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 4. Engineers and their Pigeonhole
Abstract
Every engineer has his drawer. Not to hide in it. Nor to put others in it. The drawer contains everything that makes him an engineer.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 5. Engineers in the Change of Digitalization
Abstract
The construction industry is currently undergoing a major transformation. Digitalization is making its way into planning, manufacturing, and usage in an unprecedented intensity.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 6. Professional Everyday Life—Engineers in Construction and Planning Projects
Abstract
Our professional life as civil engineers is determined by projects—throughout all phases of our careers. Often, we feel like a small, perhaps important cog in the project machinery, focusing our energy on technical solutions. However, those who seek an overview in the project and understand the nature of projects beyond the technical can contribute more than just being a single cog, can influence other cogs, and optimize the interplay for the success of the project.

Chapter 7. Engineers as Executives
Abstract
Engineers lead engineering companies at various levels. However, the path to leadership responsibility sometimes progresses faster than the acquisition of the necessary skills.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 8. Engineers and their Error Management
Abstract
One way or another, we often hear or express comments about mistakes.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 9. Statics does not Agree with Haste
Abstract
“Statics does not go well with haste!”
Moritz Menge
Chapter 10. The “Psyche” of Statics
Abstract
The static calculation is only what the structural engineer uses to shape components that meet the demands of statics. He must follow the “harmony of forces” here.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 11. Civil Engineers and their role in Climate Change
Abstract
We engineers, with our products and developments, are partly responsible for a large portion of human-made CO2 emissions.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 12. Engineers and Politicians
Abstract
Politics influences the lives of all people in various ways. It also affects the professional world of each individual in different ways. This also applies to engineering, without which our lives and our work environment would look completely different.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 13. Engineers and Lawyers in the Construction and Planning Process
Abstract
There are not a few builders who hold the opinion that lawyers have no place in construction.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 14. Engineers and Sales
Abstract
Many engineers today still struggle more or less with the commercial aspect.
Moritz Menge
Chapter 15. Engineers and (their) Children
Abstract
Engineers are like children, some children’s toys are similar to the equipment of engineers, and the eyes of both engineers and children shine equally. Let’s make something of it!
Moritz Menge
Chapter 16. Afterword
Abstract
The thoughts in this book have been formulated from my perspective as a civil engineer. It is what occupies me as an engineer—in addition to my professional everyday life. Nevertheless, many thoughts can be transferred to other engineering fields.
