The roll-out of electric mobility is influenced by many factors. The local power grid and charging infrastructure, but also the permanent magnets and hairpin winding of the electric motor as well as the costs of the battery play a positive and negative role. In the ATZ interview, Bernhard Schmitt from BorgWarner talks about regional differences in the markets in China, Europe and the USA, but also about the strategy of achieving a turnover of ten billion US dollars by 2027 with electrical products such as the new on-board charger.
Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Bernhard Schmitt (born in 1963) is Global Director Engineering eDrives at BorgWarner since July 2021 in Nuremberg (Germany) where he leads the global product development business for electric motors. Schmitt studied mechanical engineering until 1986 at Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences and graduated as a Dipl.-Ing. (FH). Since 2008, Schmitt gained profound industry knowledge occupying various executive positions at Continental and Continental/Vitesco, that means for electric drives development, power electronics, inverter development, and inverter test and validation. In July 2021, he moved to BorgWarner. Since then, he was responsible for the product launches of the high-voltage hairpin motor HVH220 among other things. In December 2023, the responsibility for Integrated Drive Modules (iDM) named as iDM220 and iDM146 was added to him.
