Abstract

This chapter applies the spatial interaction model with land use to Terceira island involving: (1) the delimitation of study areas, collection and processing of data relating to: population, occupation of the territory, employment, aggregation of the main economic activities, productivity and consumption by economic sector; (2) collection of data related to the climatic variables of Terceira, orography, soils and territory occupation; (3) determination of soil suitability for each activity considered; (4) carrying out surveys among farmers about the value of agricultural land; (5) model calibration and validation; and (6) application of the model to 5 scenarios of climate change because they involve changes in the basic employment due to the changes in land aptitudes associated to global warming. The model allows to estimate the impacts on the employment in different sectors of activity, their spatial distribution and, using bid-rents, to estimate the changes in real value of the land.

The “lower areas” correspond to a strip of land around the island with an elevation of up to 300 m where practically the entire residential area of the island is located. We find some houses above this level, namely in the parishes of Posto Santo, Ribeirinha, Serreta or Santa Bárbara, but these are occasional situations, which even so do not exceed the 300 m level. Without any regulation in this matter, it can be said that it was man who, throughout the centuries, from settlement to the present day, defined the conditions of bio climatic comfort, through the construction of their houses.

The Herfindahl index is calculated from the aggregation, for the set of territorial units considered in the analysis, of the square of the contribution of each territorial unit i for each sector of activity k. Its lower limit, which depends on the total number of territorial units considered in the analysis, corresponds to a situation of minimum special concentration in the sector, that is, the sector is equally distributed across the set of territorial units considered. The upper limit of the index corresponds to the situation of maximum special concentration, which is obtained when sector k is present in only one of the I territorial units under study. When the contribution of each territorial unit I to sector k is squared, \(\frac{{X}_{ik}}{{X}_{k}}\).
