Carbon dioxide molecules are highly stable. Once they have been emitted into the atmosphere, they remain there for centuries and have an active impact on the climate. We know that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased from around 290 ppm in 1860 to approximately 420 ppm today. To avoid further global warming, we will have to extract CO2 from the atmosphere - a process which is technically feasible. Carbon dioxide in the ambient air currently presents us with problems, but it is also on the brink of becoming a raw material in the development of new technologies and business models. …
