Abstract

Using high Si spheroidal graphite cast iron (SGI), thermal fatigue tests at a temperature of 600 ºC were carried out. Surface layer degradation on test samples was studied, i.e., degradation of graphites, initiation and growth of cracks in relation to specific characteristics of graphites as well as oxidation process. Special attention was devoted to the oxidation progress of degenerated graphite nodules (complex structured graphite that contains also small ferrite particles), whereas their oxidation rate is accelerated in comparison to usual graphite nodules. Crack initiation and growth are accelerated in case of the successive arrangement of graphite, by the process of graphite-matrix debonding. The complex process of oxidation is related to the characteristics of graphite particles as well as their distribution in the matrix.
