Das Kapitel bietet eine umfassende Darstellung der Tribologie – die Wissenschaft und Technologie von interagierenden Oberflächen in relativer Bewegung – die sich mit der Optimierung von technischen Systemen aus der Untersuchung von Reibung und Verschleiß befasst. Die tribologischen Grenzflächenprozesse, die zu reibungsbedingter Energieverlust und verschleißbedingter Materialverschlechterung führen, werden analysiert und Prinzipien und Methoden zur Zustandsüberwachung, zur Prüfung von Tribosystemen und zur Darstellung von Tribodaten werden beschrieben.
