It is fair to note that Meta has lately release a “content library” app that allows selected researchers to access social media data in real time (https://developers.facebook.com/docs/content-library-api). This might be a step in the right direction, with social media companies deciding to “open up” their research data to third parties such as universities and independent researchers, along with government institutions.
