From a hardware point of view, extruder instrumentation is one of the most critical components of the entire machine. An important reason for this is that the internal workings of the extruder are totally obscured by the barrel and the die. In many cases, the only visual observation that can be made is of the extrudate leaving the die. When a problem is noticed in the extrudate, it is difficult to determine the source and location of the problem.
