Über dieses Buch

This book discusses the challenges that modern and flexible workplace concepts pose for managers. In particular, it addresses the uncertainties and stress factors that employees face when working in multi-space environments and how they become attached to their workplace. Drawing on a hybrid methodological approach that combines a literature review with practical lessons learned as a workplace change consultant, it offers managers concrete advice on how to lead in multi-space environments.

This book aims to reduce the uncertainties and stressors caused by new work environments, and ideally to transform them into growth opportunities for the entire company. Providing concrete solutions, it represents a valuable asset for managers, HR professionals, and workplace initiative leaders alike.

1. Leadership and New Worlds of Work

How much do new working environments have to do with leadership?

2. New Work Environments: A Strategic Process
Abstract
In the beginning there is always the first thought, the first idea that you want to change something (Fig. 2.1). To be more modern, to be cooler, to be like the others, to use space more efficiently, to have a nicer office, to have agile ways of working and spatial structures, etc. There are many possible ideas that can be the start of a journey into new working worlds.

3. New Working Environments Create Stress
Abstract
In a way, eustress can be seen as a good form of stress that we need to keep our inner engine at operating temperature. It drives us (in conjunction with other physical and mental stimuli) to come up with new ideas in the office, to complete tasks well and quickly, or to perform well in sport. Stress can therefore motivate us to perform and pursue a task in a focused and efficient manner (Fig. 3.1). So, to be productive and challenging, you need a healthy amount of positive stress. Eustress therefore helps us to “stay on the ball”.

4. Discover Efficiency Killers
Abstract
It is enormous: 58 billion euros are lost every year alone because employees in knowledge-intensive professions are constantly interrupted in their work.

5. Conflicts in New Working Environments
Abstract
Not every dispute is a conflict. The term conflict is derived from the Latin confligere, which means to collide, to clash. A conflict is characterised by the fact that:

6. The Human in the Field of Tension Between the Real and the Virtual World
Abstract
If it were that easy to make working environments and leadership styles an efficiency booster through heavily designed layouts in cool office structures, and at the same time make everyone happy, then we would have hit the jackpot.

7. The Power of the Built Environment on our Experience and Behaviour
Abstract
The application of psychological principles in architecture is an effective and efficient method to raise modern working environments to a new level. With the knowledge of psychology, we can not only design spaces, but also influence the human psyche. Through the skilful design of spaces, latently existing conflicts can be improved. The human being as a key element for high performance requires a harmonious interaction of intellect, culture and architectural psychology. It can be compared to lubricating oil or sand in a gearbox, the former promoting performance while the latter diminishes it.

8. The Virtual Space
Abstract
Working from home is one of those matters: One man’s joy is another man’s sorrow. It is an ongoing topic in many companies and is constantly being discussed anew. From my many years of consulting experience, I have to say that the implementation of home office options has to be handled sensitively. It depends very much on the respective company, the personality, as well as the private situation of the employees, the activity and the area of responsibility. In other words, a whole series of interdependencies that influence each other.

9. The Physical Space
Abstract
Architecture is characterised by its distinctiveness. In contrast to other industries, which strive for characteristics such as repeatability, these concepts have only limited applicability in architecture. The architect has to deal with different factors such as typography, climate and regional resources and find a suitable and unique solution.

10. Emotional Leadership as a Booster for New Work Environments
Abstract
The emotionally intelligent leader should be able to recognise how employees relate to their environment and understand how they feel. Given that, according to many philosophers who study emotions, (a) a particular emotion arises as a result of our own evaluative process and (b) emotions can have their own drive and motivation, an emotionally intelligent leader can more accurately assess a person’s behaviour based on their emotional disposition and values.
