Abstract

This chapter presents a review of the literature on the location of economic activities according to distances to the location of supply factors and to the location of the demand products. Plus a proposal of land suitability classes defined by the list of land uses that can compete for each land class, dependent on precipitation, temperature, soil, slope and infrastructure. Regarding the literature on location the recognized models of (Thünen, Isolated State: an English edition of Der Isolierte Staat, Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1826; Isard, Location and space-economy; a general theory relating to industrial location, market areas, land use, trade, and urban structure. Published jointly by the Technology Press of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Wiley, Cambridge, 1956; Perroux, Note sur la notion de pole de croissance? Economic Appliqee 307–320 1955; Perroux, Regional economics: theory and practice. The Free Press, New York, 1970; Myrdal, Economic theory and underdeveloped regions. Gerald Duckworth, London 1957; Hirschman, The strategy of economic development. Yale University Press, New Haven, 1958; North, Agriculture in regional economic growth. Am J Agric Econ 41(5):943–951, 1959; Krugman, J Polit Econ 99:483–499, 1991) are described. Explaining the method adopted in the book the method proposed is exemplified for land suitability classes for the North of Morocco and for Terceira Island for five land uses: urban, horticulture, agriculture, pasture and forest.

Bid-rents derive from the central concept developed by von Thünen, in which the central position of the market city is now attributed to the city’s employment center (Central Business District—CBD). The size of the occupied areas is determined by four factors: population, income, transport costs and value of agricultural land (Alonso 1964; Mills 1967; Muth 1969). These developments were also known as the standard monocentric model, although the majority of the authors preferred the denomination of bid-rents.

2
Commodities—These are articles of commerce, goods that do not undergo alteration processes (or that are poorly differentiated), such as fruits, vegetables, cereals and some metals. As they follow a certain pattern, the price is traded on a global scale on a stock exchange subject to market circumstances (supply and demand). It also means raw material (products used to make other goods) and in the text in question, the author, when expressing himself in English, makes no distinction between one case and the other.

3
The concept of Convexity in economics is used in the Consumer Theory, where it is assumed that averages are preferable over extremes. On the other hand, when a preference system is non-convex, it is assumed that some prices produce a budget that supports two optimal consumption decisions (Blume 2008).

4
Ricardo’s Land Income theory starts from three pre-existing ideas: monopoly theory, land productivity (soil fertility vs. labor) and the theory of decreasing yields. For David Ricardo, the land rent is the portion of the land product that is paid to the owner for the use of the original and indestructible forces of the soil. This theory remains virtually unchanged to date and perfectly integrated into contemporary economic theory (Reis and Santin 2007).

5
The input output models in economics were developed by Wassily Leonif and presented in 1941 in his book The Structure of the American Economy. These models use a matrix to represent the economy of a country or region, to predict the impact of changes in one industry on others and on the population, government and foreign suppliers within the same economy (Richardson 1972).

6
Christiaan Huygens in 1659 defined that in a curvilinear movement, the force responsible for the variation of the velocity modulus is the centripetal force. Centrifugal force refers to a force responsible for throwing the body out of the curve during the circular path.

7
Management Level: grouped in three groups (A, B and C). Management level A (primitive) is based on agricultural practices that reflect a low technical-cultural level, management level B (poorly developed) is based on agricultural practices that reflect an average technological level. Finally, management level C (developed) is based on practices that reflect a high-level technological level (Beek et al. 1997).

8
The term rural dwellers were used for production units in rural spaces that group plots of cultivation and residence in a single unit. These are family-friendly intensive farming systems, especially vegetables and legumes, involving households operating in most situations as self-consumption gardens, although farmers market part of their production to urban areas, particularly the city of Tangier, Silveira et al. (2016).

9
The Lajes base is a military base that integrates the Portuguese Air Force and the United States Air Force. Through bilateral agreements, this military unit plays a fundamental role in the economy of Terceira Island, not only because of the number of jobs it generates but also because of the wealth that is generated in Terceira through the presence of the North American military, so it was understood to integrate it in this study, as a sector of economic activity with land occupation, duly defined and with the respective associated employment.

10
For the island of Terceira, a Land Use Capability system adapted from (Pinheiro et al. 1987). For the Tahaddart basin and adjacent areas, it was adapted from the soil map of (Cavallar 1950) the FAO classification (1984).

11
Adapted for classification FAO (1984).

12
Created in ArcGis 10.2, using the Spatial Analyst/Slope extension from the digital model of the DEM terrain by Jarvis et al. (2008).

14
In the works developed by Olgyay (1998), one of the crucial factors in determining bioclimatic comfort for urban areas is the average relative humidity of the air, where a value between 65–75% is established. As the climate of the Azores archipelago is maritime temperate, with average relative humidity above 85%, this factor is not suitable for the island reality. From the average relative humidity charts of the island of Terceira (Azevedo 1996), this factor was correlated with the average annual temperature and the minimum value of this last variable was defined at 16 °C.

Orange was considered a primary necessity (as a source of vitamin C in the prevention of diseases such as scurvy) in the diet of seafaring crews until the end of the nineteenth century. With Napoleonic invasions across Europe, the Mediterranean regions that supplied British fleets were blocked by the French. The Azores Archipelago, due to its geographical position, quickly became the main citrus supply region for the British Royal Navy, due to the blockade of Mediterranean ports imposed by the French (Aranda 2007).

The INSPIRE Directive was transposed into national legislation in 2009, through Decree-Law No. 180/2009 of 7 August, regulating, among other aspects, the national registration of geographic data, metadata, geographic data services, and access and sharing of spatial data service sets (Mariano et al. 2011).
