Abstract

Lecturers play a central role in improving the quality of higher education. Engaged lecturers are expected to be more dedicated and have a higher commitment to disseminating knowledge and technology through education, research, and social service activities. However, lecturers are struggling to balance their professional and personal roles as a result of high workloads. Such circumstances make them more vulnerable to stress and burnout. This study focuses on work engagement, which is considered the antithesis of burnout. Based on an Islamic values approach, this study proposes a new conceptual model of ma’iyyah work-life enhancement to improve work engagement. This study aims especially at addressing the research gaps between job crafting and work engagement, as well as between workplace spirituality and work engagement. Furthermore, it is a response to scholars who suggest future research to further investigate the roles of family supports in improving work engagement. It is expected that this model will offer both theoretical and practical contributions to the development of work-life balance theory and enhance the engagement of lecturers.
