Zusammenfassung

In diesem Kapitel wird das Verhältnis von Kultur und Persönlichkeit behandelt: Wie stark variieren Persönlichkeitsunterschiede und ihre Bedingungen und Konsequenzen zwischen unterschiedlichen Kulturen und warum? Unterschiede in der Persönlichkeit zwischen Populationen werden in genetischen, ökologischen und kulturellen Unterschieden gesehen. Populationsunterschiede und ihre Veränderung durch Migration werden am Beispiel Intelligenz und Schulleistung dargestellt, Kulturunterschiede am Beispiel Individualismus – Kollektivismus. Persönlichkeit variiert viel stärker innerhalb von Populationen als zwischen ihnen. Das Wissen um die große Gemeinsamkeit aller Menschen schützt vor der Stereotypisierung der vorhandenen Unterschiede und vor Rassismus. Das Wissen um die kulturellen Unterschiede ist andererseits ebenso wichtig für den Kontakt und das Zusammenleben unterschiedlicher Kulturen. Hier wird es praxisrelevant und hat in Zeiten der Globalisierung und Migration eine wachsende Bedeutung.
