The peripheral states are among the least studied countries in the international system. Nevertheless, they are protagonists in some of the most acute world and regional processes because of their geopolitical actions and their role in the decisions and policies of other states. Here, we consider the periphery as a space in which converge non-power states (according to Neorealist theory), underdeveloped states within the capitalist mode of production (world-systems theory), and subordinate states conditioned by the global power hierarchy (theory of international hierarchy) (see Chaps. 3 and 8). …
