Volumetric geometric accuracy of multi-axis measurement and technological systems: analysis and correction

Abstract

The study presents a method of accuracy improvement for multi-axis software-controlled technological and measuring systems. Such multi-axis systems are cyber-physical when integrating calculations into physical processes in modern digital production. Volumetric accuracy, an ability to reproduce precisely a complex geometrical surface, is an important characteristic of multi-axis systems. Researchers are committed to improve the measurement devices and techniques to compensate for volumetric inaccuracies. Herein, a method of convenient visualization of large amounts of measurement data is proposed for effective analysis, and a strategy for boosting accuracy by compensating volumetric errors has been developed based on this method. The proposed visualization method enables to make conclusions about the accuracy of multi-axis systems and investigate the influence of various components on volumetric error in multi-axis system faults. Moreover, to improve the volumetric accuracy approach, a software has been developed. The results confirmed that the volumetric accuracy was improved with minimum effort and material costs. Thus, the proposed visualization method and approach to increasing volumetric accuracy allow a digital combination of information regarding the accuracy characteristics of multiple processing and measuring multi-axis systems into a single network of an enterprise or complex of enterprises as well as the use of artificial intelligence in the development and improvement of existing or new technological routes.
