About this book

This book systematically examines the progression of carrying capacity research and its correlation with sustainable development, constructing a new framework of interactive theory and application methods within the context of sustainable development. Additionally, it links carrying capacity theory and methods with the unique challenges faced by China in achieving sustainable development. The book delves into the implementation of sustainable development strategies tailored to China’s specific circumstances. In practical research, the book conducts comprehensive calculations and analyses of the carrying capacity of various regions in China from resource, environmental, and economic perspectives. It employs various analytical approaches to elucidate and investigate three key issues in China’s current development landscape: regional functional planning, urban-rural coordinated development, and the transformation of economic growth models. The book is intended to unveil more efficacious solutions, pathways, and measures to address these challenges.

Chapter 1. Carrying Capacity: Theory and Research Methods
Abstract
Sustainable development is one of the major concerns around the world today, and, one of the common goals pursued by mankind. It does not necessarily mean keeping development without resource consumption or environmental pollution or making development completely independent of resources and environment. Instead, it means keeping development within the carrying limits of resources, environment, population, and economy to make sure that development will continue. Therefore, sustainable development essentially means the sustained carrying of ecosystems, that is, the overall and sustained carrying capacity of resources, environment, population, and economy.

Chapter 2. Calculation and Analysis of Population Carrying Capacity of China’s Regional Resources, Environment, and Economy
Abstract
Based on the previous theoretical analysis of carrying capacity, this chapter starts from the study of the internal variables of factors that affect the carrying capacity of resources, environment, and economy, follows the problem-solving logic of “factors selection—model construction—empirical analysis”, and takes regional population carrying capacity as the research object and a moderate population capacity as the objective to carry out empirical calculation and analysis of the current population carrying capacity in various regions of China. And finally, it puts forward relevant countermeasures and suggestions.

Chapter 3. Carrying Capacity and China’s Regional Functional Planning

Chapter 4. Carrying Capacity and China’s Urban–Rural Coordination
Abstract
While enjoying continued increase in overall national strength, China is facing imbalanced urban–rural development. The interactive improvement of urban and rural carrying capacity is the essence and key to promoting coordinated urban–rural development of society and economy.

Chapter 5. Some Problems Concerning EW-MFA and China’s Economic Growth
Abstract
Economic development affects natural ecosystems by depleting natural resources, especially non-renewable resources, and at the same time, by discharging huge waste, including various pollutants, back into nature.
