Zusammenfassung

Die Umstände, die zu einer Krise in der psychischen Gesundheitsversorgung in den USA und weltweit geführt haben, werden diskutiert. Die begrenzte Wirksamkeit, Sicherheitsprobleme und die hohen Kosten vieler psychotroper Medikamente haben zu einem dringenden Mandat für sicherere, effektivere und kostengünstigere Behandlungen von psychischen Erkrankungen geführt. Das konventionelle westliche Modell der psychischen Gesundheitsversorgung ist in seiner Fähigkeit begrenzt, die Ursachen von psychischen Erkrankungen zu lindern, da seine Theorien und Methoden nur einige der komplexen Ursachen von Symptomen ansprechen. Trends, die eine zunehmende Akzeptanz von komplementärer und alternativer Medizin (CAM) durch die Allgemeinheit, Patienten und Gesundheitsdienstleister fördern, werden überprüft. Die westliche Medizin wird durch eine zunehmende Offenheit gegenüber nichtwestlichen Heiltraditionen und eine wachsende Nachfrage nach individuellerer Pflege beeinflusst. In industrialisierten Weltregionen gibt es einen Trend zu eklektischer Ausbildung unter Anbietern von psychischer Gesundheitsversorgung, von denen viele CAM-Modalitäten in ihrer klinischen Praxis verwenden oder empfehlen. Personen, die ein psychisches Gesundheitsproblem melden, nutzen signifikant häufiger CAM im Vergleich zur Allgemeinbevölkerung und Personen mit schwereren Symptomen kombinieren eher westliche medizinische Behandlungen und CAM. Die integrative psychische Gesundheitsversorgung, die validierte CAM-Modalitäten in die Mainstream-Behandlung einbezieht, ist ein aufkommendes Paradigma, das die komplexen Ursachen von psychischen Erkrankungen besser anspricht als aktuelle Mainstream-Behandlungen und Versorgungsmodelle und dabei erhebliche potenzielle Kosteneinsparungen ermöglicht. Durch die Kombination ausgewählter konventioneller und CAM-Behandlungen auf Einzelfallbasis bietet die integrative psychische Gesundheitsversorgung mehr Vorteile im Vergleich zu jeder speziellen konventionellen oder CAM-Modalität oder jedem einzelnen Medizinsystem.
