Abstract

This chapter examines the relationship between technological innovation and spatial structure. Technological innovation is considered the fundamental driving force behind the evolution of socio-economic spatial structure. It promotes changes in spatial structure through changes in industrial structure, the coupling relationship between industries and location factors, balanced regional development, and advancements in transportation technology. Among them, information has become a new production factor and location factor, and the development of information technology has more and more influence on the spatial structure of social economy. The development of high-tech industry also causes the change of social and economic spatial structure through location trend and location choice.

There are great differences in the conversion cycles of leading industries in a country or region. With the evolution from the agricultural society to the industrialized society and the development from the primary stage to the advanced stage in the process of industrialization, the life cycle of the leading industry is becoming shorter and shorter. Since the 1950s, the dominant industries in some developed countries have been transformed every about 10 to 15 years.
