Das Kapitel präsentiert die Eigenheiten US-amerikanischer Konflikttraditionen und sozialer Bewegungen im Kontext der spezifischen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungsbedingungen der USA. Es fokussiert auf einige zentrale progressive wie rechte Bewegungskomplexe, um jeweilige Mobilisierungen im Kontext polit-ökonomischer Entwicklungen transparent zu machen und dadurch typische Merkmale US-amerikanischer Protestbewegungen zu verdeutlichen: ihre Verankerung in der libertär-individualistischen Kultur, ihre Orientierung auf Gleichberechtigung innerhalb des liberalen Paradigmas, ihre starke Ausrichtung auf Single Issues, das vergleichsweise schnelle Erstarken sowie relativ leichte Hineinwirken in die politischen Institutionen.
