Zusammenfassung

Der zentrale Untersuchungsgegenstand der Europaforschung in den Internationalen Beziehungen (IB) ist die Erklärung politischer Integration, d. h. die Übertragung staatlicher Hoheitsrechte auf die supranationale Ebene. Die zur Erklärung politischer Integration entwickelten Integrationstheorien sind aufgrund ihres Erkenntnisinteresses – zwischenstaatliche Kooperation – einerseits eng mit IB-Theorien verwandt. Andererseits haben sich jedoch auch genuine Integrationstheorien herausgebildet, was den Sonderstatus der Europäischen Union (EU) im Kreise internationaler Organisationen verdeutlicht. Drei unterschiedliche Denkschulen – Intergouvernementalismus, Supranationalismus (bzw. Neofunktionalismus) und Postfunktionalismus – dominieren nicht nur die integrationstheoretische Debatte, sondern tragen auch zu einem umfassenden Verständnis der jüngsten Krisenpolitik der EU bei.
