Navigating the Challenges of English Literature for Arab Students: The World in Words

Abstract

This paper examines the complex relationship between Arab students' academic pursuits and cultural settings and literature, especially English literature. It highlights how literature can both reflect and influence society values, customs and viewpoints, highlighting its importance in promoting critical thinking and cross-cultural understanding. It explores the value of English literature for Arab students, noting that it can foster intercultural understanding and extend intellectual horizons. It also discusses the difficulties Arab students face when reading English literature, including linguistic obstacles, cultural differences and administrative roadblocks. It also discusses concerns of relevance, cultural dissonance, and employment possibilities after graduation as it navigates the difficulty of reading Western literary texts within Arab cultural contexts. Despite these obstacles, the paper promotes the transforming potential of reading English literature and calls for supportive policies and inclusive learning environments to enable Arab students to pursue their literary ambitions. The paper affirms the value of literature in promoting empathy, intellectual development and a more interconnected world and calls for group initiatives to break down barriers and advance cross-cultural literary engagement.
