The Choice Between Accrual and Real Manipulation Around Information Uncertainty

Previous studies on opportunistic earnings management using accrual and real manipulation related to benchmark-beating find mixed evidence, especially when investigating alternative mechanisms (i.e., accrual earnings management and real earnings management). One issue that has not been examined is the information uncertainty environment. We expect that greater information uncertainty would provide more ambiguity about earnings management for market participants. Therefore, if managers are opportunistic, they are more likely to choose the less costly earnings management mechanism, i.e., accrual manipulation. The overall results show that firms just meeting earnings benchmarks use more accrual earnings management but not real earnings management in the high information uncertainty environment. The results hold after controlling for endogeneity and other factors that may affect earnings management.

Government Grants and CSR for Employees: Evidence from Vietnam’s SMEs

This article explores the relationship between government grants and CSR activities for employees. The panel dataset of SMEs provides evidence of a statistically significant positive effect of government grants in terms of financial on CSR for employees (trade union, social insurance, health insurance, maternity leave, and retirement). However, government grants in terms of training supports and trade promotion have negative impact on employees welfares. This result implies that the government can indirectly enhance employee welfares (CSR for employees) through direct financial grants to firm operations. In other words, businesses that receive financial grants are able to operate more efficiently, thereby, employees also receive more welfares. Besides, the training and trade promotion grants policies should be strictly controlled.

A Comparative Study of ISO Implementation in Public and Private Higher Education Institutions in Vietnam

Achieving ISO accreditation establishes a successful link between an organization and its associated parties, including learners, clients, and stakeholders. It appears that numerous public higher education institutions have effectively implemented the ISO standard, while only a small number of private educational institutions have achieved such recognition. As a result, the aim of this paper is to examine and comprehend the variations in approaches and practices utilized by educational institutions during the development and implementation of ISO projects. To achieve this goal, the study will utilize the Group Consensus Theory, which is an effective method for gathering diverse viewpoints and achieving consensus. Authors employ a series of inquiries to evaluate a given organization’s ability to conform to ISO standards. Based on research findings, private institutions of higher education exhibit challenges in addressing problems as they arise, maintaining a lack of receptivity to employee problem-solving and engaging in limited communication with their staff.

Diamond Price Prediction Using Data Mining Techniques

Data mining is the technique of uncovering different patterns and finding relationships and anomalies in the large datasets. It is used for the extraction of valuable information from the available data present in the form of a dataset. Prediction has been proposed as one of the useful techniques of data mining which can be used for predicting about future trends. Generally, regression is preferred for prediction. In a regression problem, the final output is calculated as the mean of all outputs, which is also called Aggregation. In this paper, a diamonds dataset was downloaded from Kaggle. The dataset consists of 53,940 instances and 10 features. The following dimensions were used for predicting the prices of a diamond: carat, cut, color, clarity, depth, table, price, x, y and z. Based on the above, three regression algorithms, i.e., Random Forest Regressor, K-Neighbors Regressor and Decision Tree Regressor and one optimization technique, i.e., Particle Swarm Optimization had been applied and the performance of the four algorithms were compared based on different performance and validation metrics such as testing accuracy (R2-score), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE). The testing accuracy of Random Forest Regressor was found to be 0.9822175620286142, Particle Swarm Optimization 0.9809447466912986, K-Neighbors Regressor 0.9683118493918951 and Decision Tree Regressor 0.9675318135094464. Fixed Assets and Capital Structure: Evidence from Listed Companies in Vietnam

This paper examines the effect of fixed assets on capital structure. Agency theory argues that when firms use debt, there are agency costs of debt due to the information asymmetry between shareholders and lenders. Fixed assets can be used as a device to reduce the conflicts of interest between shareholders and lenders, thus reducing agency costs of debt and increasing firms’ leverage. Using a sample of Vietnamese-listed firms on Hanoi and Hochiminh stock exchanges, we find that there is a positive effect of fixed assets on firms’ financial leverage. Moreover, firms in emerging markets like Vietnam are more likely to use fixed assets as collateral for long-term rather than short-term loans since they demand high leverage but have a low level of fixed assets. Finally, the analysis indicates that the cost of debt for companies is lower for firms with a high proportion of fixed assets and this may encourage the firms to become more leveraged.

Tea Production Efficiency in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam: A Case Study Between the Poor Household and Non-poor Household

Tea productivity in non-poor households is always higher than tea productivity in poor households. Low productivity is mainly due to farmers not exploiting the available technologies, resulting in lower production efficiency. Data-enveloped analysis (DEA) was used to evaluation the allocation, economic, and technical efficiency of tea cultivation in 210 non-poor farmers and 70 poor farmers in Thainguyen Province, Vietnam. Result has shown that most tea farms have allocation, economic and technical inefficiencies. DEA result also indicated that poor farmers are inefficient in tea cultivation with an average level of economic, allocation and technical efficiency of 70, 84.7 and 82.7%, respectively. Meanwhile, non-poor households have a higher level of efficiency with 94.3% technical effects, 85.4% distribution effects, and 80.5% cost effects. The difference in production resources is the cause of the difference tea production between poor and non-poor households.
